TRAVEL ADVISORY: DO NOT TRAVELPARSTATE advises that Dallas America is an unrecognised secessionist territory with limited central government. Violence is rampant and indiscriminate, and fighting with the United States may resume without warning. The ability of the Commonwealth to provide consular assistance is extremely limited. If you are in this country, you should leave immediately if it is safe to do so.

The War Government of the American Free States (commonly Dallas America or The South) is an unrecognised secessionist territory in the United States, comprising most of the American South and parts of Arizona, New Mexico, Utah, Colorado, Kansas and Missouri. It is nominally administered from Dallas, Texas, but effective authority rests with individual states, whose governments exercise varying degrees of control over their territories and irregular forces. The secession began in 2058, following the bankruptcy of the Ford Motor Company.
The uprising was preceded by a century of regional economic neglect, the Ford bankruptcy, rising tensions over the employment of Latin American workers in mines and oil fields, and the death of Joe Monroe – baseball star and governor of Texas – in 2057.1 The rebellion had little central coordination from the outset, and substantial portions of the secessionist territory have experienced a near-complete breakdown of public order. Police and military warlordism is prevalent along the western frontier, in Utah, New Mexico and Arizona. Ethnic cleansing has been documented across several areas.
A ceasefire agreed in February 2059 has suspended major combat operations and allowed talks on reintegration into the United States to proceed, though sporadic and uncoordinated fighting continues. There is tacit cooperation between Dallas America and the US government over key infrastructure, including nuclear sites and certain rail lines. Texas remains the most economically viable secessionist state and subsidises neighbouring territories. States and cities on the periphery of the secession have sustained severe damage from the conflict.

Joe Monroe was a significant bipartisan presence in US politics for over a decade. His sudden death in 2057 deeply affected Texas, which saw him as a champion for southern prosperity and autonomy in the union. ↩︎
