The Defence Industrial Establishment is a constituent organisation of the Ministry of Defence.
The Defence Industrial Establishment (DIE) coordinates arms production and defence procurement in the Commonwealth, primarily for the Federal Military Establishment. It is effectively responsible for defence production, and also serves as the industry’s largest customer. It sets specifications, conducts inspections and administers contracts following the divided-directorate model of older ordnance boards rather than direct management of individual plants.
This work is split between two subordinate establishments by product category. They share unified systems and a council under the DIE and are separated only for budgeting reasons. Production is concentrated in Commonwealth Arsenal, but the DIE also administers contracts with private firms where Commonwealth Arsenal lacks the relevant expertise, including Savage Arsenal for mountain and expeditionary guns and Veletia Armaments for converting light vehicles.
