The Federal Materiel Establishment (FME) is the procurement arm of the Defence Industrial Establishment for uniforms, medical supplies and other non-armament military equipment. Unlike the Federal Ordnance Establishment, the FME deals mostly with established civilian commodities rather than specialised military equipment, and much of its work is closer to bulk purchasing than industrial coordination. Materiel factories are usually sited near existing production so that military orders can be absorbed into civilian supply chains rather than run as dedicated lines.
