The Federation of Malaya is a constitutional monarchy occupying the Malay peninsula, governed through a rotating federal monarchy drawn from the royal houses of its constituent states. Decolonisation from British rule separated Malaya from Borneo and Singapore, producing a compact peninsular state with a multi-ethnic population. Ethnic and regional separatism has been a persistent feature of Malayan politics since independence, particularly in the northern states and among provincial minorities who dispute the federal constitutional settlement.
Malaya is a middle-income country with a substantial export economy built on rubber, palm oil and electronics manufacturing. It was a joint partner with Thailand in the construction of the canal across the Kra Isthmus, which has reshaped regional maritime trade and given both countries significant influence over shipping between the Indian Ocean and the South China Sea.
