The Republic of India is a federal republic occupying most of the Indian subcontinent, independent since the dissolution of British colonial authority in the postwar period. It is a democracy under sustained Hindu nationalist influence, which has shaped domestic policy and relations with neighbouring states. Central government authority is maintained partly through a large standing military and paramilitary forces, alongside federal constitutional structures. The capital was relocated from Delhi to Baghnagar as part of a planned national development programme.
India is a founding member of the Non-Aligned Movement and uses nonalignment as a framework for conducting independent foreign policy between the US and Soviet blocs. It maintains a large standing military and a domestic arms industry, and has fought several wars with Pakistan and China since independence. Relations with Vekllei are conducted through substantial bilateral trade and the presence of a large Indian diaspora across Commonwealth republics.
