Bureau of Standards

The Bureau of Standards is part of the Ministry of the Commonwealth.

The Bureau of Standards (also Standards Vekllei) establishes and maintains standards for the visual identity, administrative procedures and industrial practices of the Vekllei government and its subordinate bodies. Its remit covers both operating procedures and major design elements – flags, logos, typefaces, preferred punctuation and the appearance of Commonwealth infrastructure and publications. It has considerable authority over other departments, which generally lack autonomy to enforce their own visual identity independently. Most visual design work is performed by in-house designers and artists.

The bureau also regulates commercial and industrial standards for businesses operating in Vekllei, and prosecutes criminal breaches of those standards. It is part of the Ministry of the Commonwealth.

Departments

  • Department of Standardisation: Administers the standards directorate (GOSED, commonly Standards Vekllei) and determines standards for government identity, manuals of style and administrative procedures across all ministries and Commonwealth bodies.
    • Office of Visual Identity
    • Office of Administrative Standards
    • Office of Publications & Typography
    • Office of Infrastructure Design
  • Department of Commercial Standards (COMSTA): Regulates standards for small and medium-sized commercial businesses operating in Vekllei that are otherwise unaffiliated with bureau industry. Because private commerce exists outside the bureau framework, COMSTA’s remit is broader and more flexible than industrial standards, and draws on contracted industry contacts for its technical committees.
    • Office of Commercial Compliance
    • Office of Technical Committees
    • Office of Certification & Labelling
  • Department of Industrial Standards (INSTA): Regulates safety and quality standards for industrial and manufacturing work. INSTA is divided into sixteen technical committees that oversee particular industries, and prosecutes cases of severe negligence or breach of Commonwealth industrial standards. It also advises industry groups on product certification.
    • Office of Industrial Safety
    • Office of Product Certification
    • Office of Technical Committees (16 industry divisions)
    • Office of Prosecution & Enforcement
