The Empire of Japan is a constitutional monarchy in East Asia and one of the world’s largest industrial economies. The wartime government collapsed in the early 1940s following a military coup that ended the Pacific War. The imperial institution survived with executive authority removed, and postwar governments pursued land redistribution, industrial consolidation and parliamentary governance.
Japan is a major producer of heavy manufactured goods, photoelectrics and precision engineering, with extensive trade across the Pacific and Southeast Asia. It maintains a modest military and has not sought territorial revision or significant involvement in regional political disputes beyond commercial relations. Japan has no outstanding territorial claims and does not participate in either the American or Soviet alliance systems.
