MYBEAU — Long sleeves, long skirts. Lots of pleats and cute accessories. Long socks to hide their legs. Trying to be cute. Associated with exclusive female friendships and suspicious of women with male friends.
NEW MODS — Thin ties, thin lapels. Preference for blazers and trousers tailored slightly too short. An offshoot of the New Intellectual movement. Think they’re sophisticated. High concept and low brow.
BERMUDAS — Bermuda shorts, long socks and open-collar shirts. Named after their shorts. Common with white guys in the Caribbean, imitating the appearance of wealth in a moneyless society.
SAINTS — Veils, long sleeves, modest skirts. Part of East Atlantic New Catholicism. Fashionable to signal your moral superiority through veiling. Has had the same boyfriend since third grade.
INDIE GIRLS — Short skirts and dresses, handbags, long hair textured naturally or with curlers. That’s ‘indie’ as in ‘West Indies’. Associated with non-Caribbeans trying to look ‘Caribbean’. More common up north and down south.
LOUNGERS — Cardigans, varsity-style sweaters, untucked shirts and loose-tailored trousers. Not really a clique; more of a slacker look. Common in the Caribbean, where long sleeves and jumpers stand out in the warm climate.
TZIPORA — Old-fashioned gymslip, scuffed knees, one sock has unfolded itself. Not a clique. Not part of a clique. Hopes to be in one someday.
