New Zealand is a constitutional monarchy in the southern Pacific, prosperous and predominantly agricultural, trading within the Commonwealth and with Australia, on which it relies substantially for manufactured goods, financial services and strategic support. The economic relationship is close and longstanding, and the two countries coordinate on defence and foreign policy through Commonwealth structures.
The country’s economy is built on wool, dairy, lamb and timber, exported primarily to Commonwealth markets. New Zealand has not pursued industrial development to the degree Australia has, and its small cities – Wellington, Auckland, Christchurch – serve a largely rural hinterland rather than driving an industrial base of their own.
