The Seismic Intelligence System (codename System 4, originally Project 612) is a covert federal system in Vekllei that monitors seismic activity across Vekllei’s territories and the wider Atlantic basin. It serves both scientific and defence purposes, since both volcanoes and nuclear tests produce seismic effects. Since many Commonwealth republics are situated on active volcanic systems, it is also a primary means of disaster preparedness and Civil Defence.
Seismograph stations are located in sites mostly adapted for civil defence purposes. Primary installations on stable bedrock in geologically quiet areas detect distant events, while secondary stations near active volcanoes focus on scientific research and disaster prevention. The civilian and classified analysis draw on the same raw data, but the intelligence product – particularly nuclear test categorisation – is compartmentalised from the volcanic hazard work that most station personnel spend their days on.
