Greenwood S.p.A. is a bureau corporation that manages planned and commercial forests across the Commonwealth and coordinates the import and wholesale distribution of timber and wood products throughout the Commonwealth. The bureau consolidates some forty constituent forestry companies, plantation operators and sawmill cooperatives spread across two primary production zones – the softwood plantations of Kala in the north and the tropical hardwood forests of the Caribbean and Gulf of Guinea, which work with a separate import arm that supplements domestic supply. Greenwood does not market directly to consumers; its principal customers are furniture manufacturers, paper mills, construction contractors and the industrial packaging sector.

Kala is the bureau’s backbone. The island’s southwest coast, moderated by the Gulf Stream and warmed further by the steady atmospheric changes of the last century, now sustains managed softwood plantations. Atlantic Pine (Pinus atlantica) was already native to the coastal fringe, and Greenwood has extended these stands significantly inland through organised planting programmes on land classified as transitional tundra, south of Kala’s famous permafrost. Plantation sites are concentrated around the Kanek administrative district and the more sheltered fjord systems to the south. Growing seasons are short and variable, so yields remain modest by Nordic standards, but the Kalan holdings supply the bulk of domestic softwood needs, primarily in structural framing, pallets and paper pulp.

A further portion of the country’s timber demand, particularly for softwood species not grown domestically at scale, is met through imports. Greenwood operates purchasing agreements with major forestry exporters in Scandinavia, Canada and the Pacific Northwest, and runs dedicated import terminals in Oslola, Kairi and Kala. These receive bulk shipments of softwood and engineered lumber for redistribution under mostly long-term contracts.

As a nation of stone and concrete, the Commonwealth builds relatively little with wood, and is mostly used for interior work and furniture. This means much of it has to be dried to certain standards of quality before engineering, which are colocated with Greenwood’s import terminals. The bureau also manages a small specialist division, Greenwood Timber Heritage, which services conservation contracts for government and ecclesiastical buildings.

Greenwood is listed on the Commsec as GWD.
